Upcycling lime pellets in the metallurgic industry

Supplying a by-product from drinking water production to replace raw materials in an industrial process.

The challenge

The metallurgic industry relies on raw materials including lime for certain processes. For years Nyrstar Stolberg (formerly Berzelius Stolberg, Germany) used to source their lime demand from quarries. Part of a transition towards greener production processes the company searched for alternative sources.

Solution and impact

Central softening part of drinking water production generates a by-product, i.e. lime pellets of high purity, which can potentially be upcycled for beneficial applications. Following careful assessment of quality, risks and economics Nyrstar (Berzelius) decided to source annually 3.000 tons of lime pellets from the municipal water utility Krefeld (NGN).The material has been registered under the EU REACH system.

Status

Full scale application. Allied Waters in cooperation with Ecocalor GmbH, Nyrstar (Berzelius) and NGN Netzgesellschaft Niederrhein mbH.
