LIFE NEW HYTS: reNEWable green HYdrogen for TranSport

Demonstrating a local green hydrogen value chain for transport and accelerating the uptake of green hydrogen through replication, education and scale-up activities.

The challenge

Green hydrogen has long been recognized as a feasible option to reduce transport emissions. The transition to green hydrogen has been slow, due to several interconnected reasons: refueling infrastructure is limited, vehicles are not widely available and the associated technology is costly. Can this deadlock be broken locally by the development of a full green hydrogen value chain?

Solution and impact

LIFE NEW HYTS is a unique collaboration of local entrepreneurs, knowledge institutions and governments. The project shows the possibilities, and technical and economic feasibility for the local production, distribution and application of green hydrogen in road transport in Nieuwegein. The organization Waterstof Utrecht, part of the Province of Utrechts activities, is developing conditions for a rapid introduction of green hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles, amongst others through the execution of a covenant for green hydrogen for transport in Utrecht.

Status

During 2024, the 2,5 MWe electrolyser has been commissioned and 8 of the 15 hydrogen-powered vehicles are operational. Courses for drivers and mechanics have been developed and piloted and replication actions have been initiated both in North-Rhein Westphalia and the Bruges region. The consortium is lead by KWR and Waterstof Utrecht has assisted multiple municipalities in developing their hydrogen ambitions and the covenant has been signed by more than 130 parties.
