Bonaire Blue Destination

Designing a sustainable energy and mobility concept by using clean energy from sun and wind.

The challenge

Wind and solar energy are abundantly available at the island of Bonaire. Yet a substantial part of Bonaire’s electricity is produced using diesel generators; further, the mobility sector depends on fossil fuels. How can these sectors be decarbonized by utilizing renewable energy sources?

Solution and impact

Additional capacity of wind turbines and solar panels will enhance the share of renewables for electricity production. Surplus capacity can be used to produce green hydrogen. The stored hydrogen energy can be used for electricity production when wind and sun power are low and for mobility. This way, the dependency on fuel imports  decreases and costs for energy will become more stable.
