A zero-emission construction area Wolferen-Sprok

Water safety and sustainability hand in hand.

The challenge

Creating future proof dikes along the Dutch river Waal is part of the national Home | Hoogwaterbeschermingsprogramma. The overall goal is to reduce inland flooding risks in the area. This multi-year complex operation includes substantial handling of solids like soil and supporting materials. Reducing emissions during the works is another key factor.

Solution and impact

Waterschap Rivierenland and the consortium Combinatie De Betuwse Waard (Ploegam, GMB and Dura Vermeer) have decided for a zero-emission option based on electrical equipment. The electricity is provided by a generator fueled by hydrogen, a true zero-emission solution. And here EnergyLabNL and Genpower are coming in. This upcoming technology brings further challenges as regards to both the practical operation and proper procedures in the permitting process.

Status

Full scale operation. EnergyLabNL has enabled the permitting procedure for the hydrogen fueled electricity generator. Further we developed a rationale for similar applications at other locations.
